Reality Check

Ugly ties exist, it is a fact that we cannot get past and hopefully will be solved so that world peace can finally be attained. Joking aside, the truth is that many times people are caught up in a “trend” or some advertiser claiming something to be “timeless” or “classic.” What really is classic, that obviously can vary  from place to place, but I think the above tie does not fall into such categories

Now, I understand full well the tradition of madras and other patch-work style garments made famous by old white men across the United States, but there is a craft and ethos behind those pieces that are unfortunately being hijacked here.

Once you get past the fact that this is a really ugly tie, and that somehow it is supposed to be $115 dollars, you have to realize one thing about this tie: you buying it makes the people at J. Crew laugh, a lot. Do you know what this tie is? It is not madras, rather, it is the scraps from other garments and ties that they (J. Crew) do not know what to do with. So, they stitch them together (“expertly” together, by the way) and then sell it at a huge mark-up. Coach did this with their patch bags as well.

Perhaps I have terrible taste? Maybe I am patently oblivious to real style? I will allow you to decide whether piece-together scraps is worth your hard-earned dollars.
